Leland Ko is eleven years old and attends Weston Middle School. He started playing cello at the age of three and he currently studies with Mr. Ron Lowry at The Rivers School Conservatory. At the age of nine, he won the Junior Division of The Rivers School Conservatory 2007 Concerto Competition. One year later, Leland became the winner of the 2008 Wellesley Symphony Orchestra Young Soloist Competition and had the opportunity to perform as a soloist led by Max Hobart. Shortly after, Leland placed first in the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra’s 2009 Repertory Orchestra Concerto Competition. In the summer of 2009, Leland was invited as a guest soloist with Boston Landmarks Orchestra under Charles Ansbacher. In February this year, Leland appeared twice on NPR’s From The Top Radio Program with Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras (BYSO) and later as a soloist.
Leland spends every Sunday – his favorite day, rehearsing with the BYSO’s Senior Orchestra, in which he is the youngest member. He is planning to tour with the BYSO Senior Orchestra this summer in Great Britain.
Leland has been a competitive tennis player since the age of eight. He is coached at the New England Academy of Tennis twice weekly. He competes regularly in United States Tennis Association Junior Tennis Circuit and is ranked in Boys 12s in New England in both singles and doubles. In 2008, he was ranked as high as 4th in New England in the age group of 10 and under. That year, he advanced to the sectionals of the Little Mo Tennis Tournament in Chicago, Illinois.
Leland’s best subject at school is mathematics. He attends above grade math class and is a member of a Math Club that competes in National Math Olympiads. He received top prize in both 4th and 5th grade math competitions.
When Leland is not practicing, rehearsing, or playing tennis, Leland enjoys hanging out with his friends and playing video games with his brother on weekends.
