Andrew Y Kim

Andrew Y Kim, cello, age 15

Andrew is excited and honored to be soloing with the Brockton Symphony Orchestra as the winner of their 2021 Dr. Carol Vasconcellos Youth Concerto Competition. Andrew began playing the cello at age six, quickly developing a passion for music. Andrew has won top prizes in numerous competitions including the Fidelity/Boston Pops Young Artist Competition (first prize) leading to a solo performance with the Boston Pops Orchestra at Boston Symphony Hall, the American Protégé International Concerto Competition (first prize) leading to a solo performance at Carnegie Hall, and the American Classical Young Musician International Competition (third prize). As first prize winner or by invitation, Andrew has soloed with the Lexington Symphony, Metrowest Symphony, Rivers Conservatory Symphony and Rivers Youth Orchestras. Andrew recently had the honor of being selected as one of 60 cellists from 14 countries to compete in the International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians in 2022.

Andrew also enjoys playing in ensembles, having served as principal cellist of the Boston Youth Symphony Senior Orchestra as well as the MMEA Junior District, Rivers Conservatory and Weston High School orchestras. Andrew has been invited to play in masterclasses with Steven Isserlis, Lluís Claret, Peter Stumpf, Owen Young and Nathan Cole.

Andrew enjoys giving back to his community, organizing fundraising concerts for important causes and performing at senior living communities and local hospitals. In his free time, Andrew enjoys playing tennis and spending time with family and friends. Andrew is a sophomore at Weston High School and currently studies with and Lluís Claret and Ronald Lowry.
